Health Insurance For Unemployed is an Unfortunate Worry For Many

In these financially unstable times when many are unemployed, health insurance is a major issue. Health insurance for unemployed is an unfortunate worry for many when they lost their jobs and it really should be the last thing they need to think about. If you were covered by your employer with health benefits, federal and state laws require your coverage to continue for a certain time beyond job termination. However, if this doesn’t apply to you, there are some low cost health care options available to you.
In 1986 the US government passed a law called the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) which was designed to help individuals and families keep their health insurance that they had with their employer. There are some limitations involved with COBRA, though. If you continue with the plan you had with your former employer you can only keep it for 18 months as is unless you become injured or ill within the first two months of being on COBRA. In this case, you have 29 months of coverage.
The employer, however, no longer subsidizes the monthly premiums and you’ll have to pay the coverage in full. This can pose a financial problem for you if you have no savings or health insurance for unemployed available to draw on to help you pay the premiums. If you can’t afford this, though, you may have access to inexpensive health insurance plans if you and your family are in good health.
However, if you have pre-existing conditions and you want to have health insurance for unemployed, COBRA will probably be the least expensive option open to you since new coverage for pre-existing conditions will either be very expensive or it will not be available at all. If you can’t afford COBRA or you didn’t have health insurance with your employer, shop around some and see if you can’t find a decent plan with prices that you can afford until you are employed again – you might be surprised by what you find.
